Panicale is the classic medieval castle in a well-disposed defensive position. In fact it's found his ancient walls in the top of a hill, about 440 meters above the sea level. It's dominating the Trasimeno lake's plain and the Valdichiana in the NW-NE side and the Valnestore valley in the opposite SE-SW side. |
Panicale structurally borned in the highest part of the hill to increase itself downward during the pass of the years. It's easy to individuate the separate expansion ring's, in others words the present elliptical shape "borgi" that expands just to the "fosso largo" and "fosso stretto", the two external streets that you can reach only by two gates, the "Porta Perugina" to Est and the "Porta Fiorentina" to West. |
The highest part of the present historical centre is dominate by the "Palazzo del Podestà" (1300). If you goes down you can found the second village square with the double entrance at the "Collegiata di San Michele" main church. One "cerchio" down and we are at the "Teatro Caporali" one of the smaller theatre in the world (few places more than 100). The third square is today the centre of the village's life, just inside "l'arco", the Porta Perugina gate. |
